Rancho Cucamonga covers an area of 39.9 square miles.  It lies at the conjunction of the Mojave trail, the Old Spanish Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, historic US Route 66 and El Camino Real.  The town takes its name from the Tongva Native American language and means "sandy place" or "village where the waters come out".  This refers to the area's fertile soil and the seasonal flooding that occurs due to the community's proximity to the mountains.
